How to choose a mattress

A mattress is the one thing in the bedroom you use every night, so it is worth choosing on fit rather than price alone. Four questions cover most of the decision.

1. Which size?

Pick the largest size the room and bed frame comfortably allow. A Queen is the most common size for a main bedroom; a King gives couples more room; Single and King Single suit kids and teens. Exact measurements are on the size guide. Measure your frame or room first, and check the mattress fits the frame's inside dimensions.

2. How firm?

Firmness is personal, but a few rules of thumb hold. Side sleepers often prefer a little more give at the shoulder and hip. Back and stomach sleepers usually want firmer support under the middle of the body. Heavier sleepers tend to need a firmer mattress to stay supported, and lighter sleepers a softer one to feel any contouring. If you sleep with a partner who has different needs, choose on the person who is hardest to please.

3. Innerspring or memory foam?

Innerspring mattresses use coils for a bouncier, more traditional feel and tend to sleep cooler. Memory foam moulds to your shape and absorbs movement, so you feel less of a partner turning over, and some people find it warmer. Many mattresses combine the two. Neither is better in general: it comes down to the feel you prefer.

4. Do you need a protector?

A mattress protector keeps out spills and sweat and is much cheaper to replace than a mattress. It is worth adding to any mattress, and especially one for a child's bed.
